Reddit had a good quarter. Revenue rose 61% to $805 million, adjusted EBITDA more than doubled to $343 million, daily active uniques climbed 18% to 130.3 million, and earnings beat the estimates. The stock fell by as much as 23%.

The gap between those two facts is the most useful thing any marketer will read this month, because it is the first time a public company has been openly repriced on the question of what Google referral traffic is still worth.

What actually spooked the market

On the call, chief executive Steve Huffman described search referrals as choppy. That word did more damage than any number in the Q2 results. Investors were not reacting to a bad quarter. They were reacting to uncertainty about where new users come from once Google answers more questions itself, since Reddit content is one of the things those answers are frequently built from.

A data licensing arrangement worth around $60 million expiring in 2027 added to the mood. The combination is what a concentration risk looks like when somebody finally puts a multiple on it.

Why this matters if you are not Reddit

Most businesses carry the same shape of risk without the share price to reveal it. You do not find out that 70% of your new customers arrive through one channel until that channel moves. Reddit at least had an earnings call to force the disclosure.

The practical read is not “diversify,” which is advice nobody has ever acted on. It is narrower: work out what proportion of your first-time buyers, not sessions, arrive through a channel you do not control, and decide in advance what you would do if that halved.

The audit, concretely

Split by first touch, not last. Organic search usually looks smaller than it is in last-click reporting, because it does the introducing and something else takes the credit for the sale.

Count new customers, not traffic. A channel that sends volume but no first purchases is not the dependency. The one that quietly introduces most of your buyers is.

Check your informational pages separately. The guides and how-to content are where AI answers bite first. Transactional pages have held up better so far.

Name the number. Write down the percentage. A team that knows the figure is 64% behaves differently from a team that says “quite a lot.”

What Reddit is doing, and what you can copy

Reddit’s response is to push people into its app, which is the standard move: convert borrowed audience into owned audience before the borrowing gets harder. For a small business the equivalents are unglamorous and they work. An email list you actually send to. A reason for someone to come back that does not require them to search again. Direct relationships with the ten customers who account for most of the revenue.

The part worth stealing is the timing. Reddit is doing this while it still has the traffic. Building an owned channel is much easier when the borrowed one is still delivering people to build it with.

What can go wrong here

The overreaction is to abandon a channel that is still profitable. Search referrals being volatile is not the same as search referrals disappearing, and Reddit’s own revenue grew 61% through exactly this period. If you cut organic investment on the strength of a headline, you may be cutting the thing that still introduces most of your customers.

The other trap is treating one company’s disclosure as the market. Reddit is unusually exposed: its content is close to a perfect input for AI answers, and a large share of its users historically arrived through a Google search that ended in a Reddit thread. A B2B services firm with a referral network and a sales team faces a much smaller version of this problem. Read the story as a prompt to check your own numbers, not as a forecast of them.

It is also fair to say the evidence is thin and moving. One quarter, one company, one adjective on an earnings call. The measurement of how much AI answers actually cost publishers is still contested even at the level of basic figures. Anyone selling you certainty about the size of this is guessing.

Do the audit this week

It takes an afternoon and it does not require new tools. Pull first-touch attribution for new customers over the last twelve months, find your largest single uncontrolled channel, and write the percentage on the wall. If the number surprises you, that surprise is the finding. Reddit shareholders got theirs in one trading session, which is a more expensive way to learn it.

Editor’s note: This area changes quickly, so check the latest platform policy before making compliance decisions.

Picture a supplier of commercial kitchen equipment that has held position one for “how to descale a commercial dishwasher” for two years. Nothing about the page changes. The ranking does not change either. What changes is that Google now answers the question above the results, and the citation next to that answer points at a manufacturer the reader has already heard of.

That is the shape of the problem in the newest search data, and it is not a ranking problem.

What the 43% figure actually says

Similarweb’s generative AI report put AI Overviews on 43% of US searches in May 2026, up from roughly 15% in January 2025. Reporting on the same dataset describes Google’s AI search becoming the default rather than a layer sitting on top of it.

Treat the number itself with some care. Similarweb has not published its query sample, device mix or vertical weighting, and it does not define precisely what counts as an Overview appearance. Other measurements land a lot lower. Adthena recorded AI Overviews on 18% of US searches in June 2026, and an academic study put the activation rate under 14%. Every source agrees on the direction. None of them agree on the size.

So the useful takeaway is not the number. It is that the share is climbing fast enough that a plan built on ten blue links is depreciating faster than most content calendars assume.

Ranking and being cited are now two separate jobs

This is the part that catches teams out. You can hold position one and lose the citation. The AI layer is not picking the best page. It is assembling an answer from sources it has some reason to trust, and brand familiarity is one of those reasons.

For an established name that is free. For everyone else the work moves. Better content does not fix an absence of recognition, because recognition is built somewhere other than your own site.

What that changes in practice

Entity consistency. The same company name, the same description, the same category language everywhere you appear. Directory listings, your LinkedIn page, trade association records, supplier databases. Models form an idea of what your business is from the agreement between those sources, not from your homepage.

Mentions where the model already looks. One paragraph about you in a trade publication moves citation odds more than another post on your own blog. That is uncomfortable if your entire plan was publishing.

Unbranded content specific enough to quote. Our kitchen equipment supplier will get cited for descaling intervals by machine type long before it gets cited for “best commercial dishwasher.”

What can go wrong

The obvious failure is treating this as a volume problem. If citation follows recognition, twenty more posts on a site nobody links to changes nothing, and it burns the hours that a single trade placement would have used better.

The second failure is over-correcting. Some businesses read the AI Overviews coverage, decide organic search is finished, and shift budget to paid before measuring anything. Look at your own numbers first. If your traffic sits in transactional queries, or in a vertical where Overviews rarely fire, the headline percentage may barely touch you. Local service businesses in particular tend to see far less of this than national averages suggest.

This also may not be worth prioritising at all if your site is six months old with no organic base. Recognition compounds, which is a polite way of saying it starts slowly. A brand new site chasing AI citations is optimising the last mile of a journey it has not begun.

The measurement gap nobody has closed

There is no clean way to see how often you are cited. Search Console reports clicks, not appearances inside an answer. The workable substitute is manual and dull: pick fifteen queries that matter commercially, check them monthly in a clean browser session, and log whether an Overview fires and who gets named. It is a small sample and it will never be statistically sound. It still beats guessing.

Worth knowing that Google has also started rolling out controls here. The AI search opt-out limits some of this exposure, though what you give up in return is worth understanding before you touch it.

Start with the fifteen queries

Before you rewrite a single page, find out whether the answers Google is now giving on your behalf mention you at all. That one check tells you whether your problem is content or recognition, and those two problems need completely different budgets. Most teams assume the first and are quietly losing to the second.

Editor’s note: This area changes quickly, so check the latest platform policy before making compliance decisions.
